A little bit about Bansko

Where is Bansko?

Bansko is a ski resort located in Bulgaria, in the Pirin Mountains. It’s one of the most popular skiing destinations in Eastern Europe and is becoming an increasingly popular choice for skiing holidays all around the world.

How to get to Bansko?

The closest airport to Bansko is Sofia Airport, which is roughly two and a half hours away by car. From there, you can take a transfer bus or hire a private car service to get you to the ski resort. Totem ski is a ski/snowboard rental center, school, and shop. All in one for winter sports your needs.

Their teachers are the best in town and can teach from beginners to experts which is not always the case in other schools.

Rental material is well maintained.

Their shop is not big but offers very high-quality products from brands like Hestra (gloves) and Head (ski material), and others.

This year my husband and I got ourselves some amazing leather Hestra gloves. And I finally got myself some new Head ski boots from the latest generation. Always ask for a discount, they are happy to serve their client.

How to avoid the crowds in Bansko

Bansko is a famous ski resort and it can get crowded. Here are my personal tips for avoiding crowds.

Avoid the following times of the season:

  1. New Year’s Eve. There is one really good perk if you decide to spend the holiday season in Bansko. The Kukeri fest in Razlog takes place from 10 AM to around 1 PM on the 1st of January. The Kukeri imitate monsters that scare the bad spirits away and welcome the new good year. This custom is characteristic of Southwest Bulgaria and is possible to find in other places during Winter.
  2. Last week of January and the first of February
  3. The Bulgarian Freedom National holiday around the 3rd of March

How to have a smooth experience in Bansko

  1. Buy your ski tickets online using the Bansko app to avoid queues at the gondola
  2. Get to the gondola as early as possible
  3. If you can’t do #2 drive to the parking where the ski lifts begin high in the mountain. It’s a 15-minute drive with a lot of curves so be careful. The parking costs 20 leva (10 euros) but it’s worth it to give you peace of mind.
  4. Instead of waiting for the gondola, take a minibus. There will be many mini buses waiting in front of the main ticket box on the left side of the gondola entrance. Unfortunately, they’re not free but still affordable – about 8 lv.
  5. Go to the smaller sibling of Bansko – Bezbog

The Ski Slopes in Bezbog, Dobrinishte

If you get tired of Bansko why not hop to the nearby ski resort at Dobrinishte? This small, family-friendly resort offers gentle slopes in the upper part and a black diamond slope in the lower part and two old-fashioned chair lifts for a relaxed day on the mountainside.

Make no mistake the resort is a rustic experience and looks like some vintage place taken out of time. The chair lifts are old and slow which leaves you more time to think and be in nature. There are usually no people on the slopes (unless it’s the mid-term children’s vacation) and the whole place is very tranquil.

Off-piste opportunities are plenty and preferred by most of the snowboarders visiting Dobrishishte, but be careful, you have to respect the mountain and all the possible dangers.

What about non-skiing activities?

Best Restaurants in Bansko and around

1. Bai Mile – it doesn’t get more traditional than that. Mind that this simple eatery offers daily dishes at a super cheap price. You’ll think you’re at a Sout East Asian street market than in a renown ski resort. Two kebapche and a salad will be around 3.50 euros. Enjoy this insider tip.

What is kebapche? Kebapche is a traditional Bulgarian dish made of minced pork, beef, or lamb. It is typically seasoned with garlic, black pepper, oregano, and other spices.

The kebapche is then shaped into cylindrical pieces and grilled or baked. It is usually served as an appetizer or a snack but can also be eaten as a main course with a side of vegetables or salad.

2. Mehana Bachvata, Banya – This restaurant is probably the best in Banya for traditional food. Here you will find hearty homemade dishes made with fresh ingredients, such as stuffed peppers, grilled meats, and cold cuts. My personal favorite dish is Cow head served with a sauce.

You can order fried potatoes with or without white cheese on top for the ultimate indulgence. If you’re there during summer you have to order their fat yogurt ice cream. Note: doses are generous as they should be in the region. Great selection of wines.

What is Mehana

Mehana is a traditional Bulgarian restaurant found in most towns and cities across the country. Offering a large variety of local cuisine, Mehana restaurants typically provide a cozy atmosphere with friendly service and delicious food.

Traditional dishes such as Shopska salad, Kebapche, and Musaka can often be found in these restaurants.

Live folk music is sometimes performed in the evenings and many guests join in on the singing and dancing – making a visit to Mehana an authentic cultural experience.

3. Mehana Chichovtsi (The Uncles, Banya)

Chichovtsi was recommended to me by a friend of my cousin. We went on a cold Winter evening and the fireplace was lit adding to the hearty ambiance. The food was nothing less than excellent. I recommend getting the cow tongue and horse sausage. There are vegetarian options such as stuffed peppers.

Note that there are mehanas in Bansko as well and some are very good but they are very much catering to tourists only. and these get a mix of locals and tourists.

4.Alpina, Bezbog, Dobrinishte

If you decide to spend the day skiing in Bezbog, the reward will be even better with Alpina restaurant waiting for you at the end of the ski run.

As a starter got for the deep-fried yellow cheese and add some flatbread.

But this restaurant’s is fresh fish, served directly from pond to table. A freshwater white fish is served either grilled or fried. Both versions are to die for. The local veal steak is delicious as well. You can order side dishes such as salad, french fries or my favorite – Snejanka.

What is Snejanka?

Snejanka salad is a traditional Bulgarian dish, consisting of a creamy combination of yogurt, pickled cucumbers, and garlic. The salad is usually seasoned with fresh dill and parsley, as well as other herbs depending on regional variations.

It is typically served cold and can be used as a side dish or eaten alone for a light meal. Snejanka salad is known for its refreshing flavor and creamy texture, making it the perfect accompaniment to grilled meats, fish or roasted vegetables.

5.Food Station by Tsakiris

Tsakiris is a Greek ski and snowboard rental. Their service is amazing and the staff is very professional. Right next to their rental (5 min on foot from the gondola) you’ll find their fast food restaurant.

You’ll find typical greek food that includes port or chicken gyros, wraps, and falafel. In addition, you’ll find tasty burgers, pizzas, and salty and sweet pancakes. I tried them all and can’t complain. Delicious indeed and good priced.

6.Casa di Papi

Casa di Papi is located just a few minutes on foot from the Gondola making it the perfect apres-ski restaurant with a touch of luxury. Italian dishes are served on a refined level – pizza, pasta, salad, and of course, there is a touch of Bulgarian cuisine in other dishes.

The menu is very well balanced and prices are acceptable for the quality and the polite service. I ate there several times during the ski season and highly recommend it.

There is also Casa di Papi in the Razlog center overlooking the canal. I still have to go there but the outdoor terrace looks very romantic indeed.

Located closer to Razlog, this restaurant offers a variety of delicious dishes that will tantalize your taste buds.
