Reaching Lombok is a seamless process, thanks to the island’s well-connected transportation system. The easiest way to reach Lombok is by taking a flight to Lombok International Airport, which is serviced by several domestic and international airlines. Best Activities in Lombok

Surf

Lombok is a popular destination for surfers looking for a unique surfing experience. Unlike some places, where the waves can be brutal and steep (Costa da Caparica, Portugal, I’m talking to you), Lombok offers a more user-friendly surfing experience that’s perfect for surfers of all levels. One of the top spots for surfing in Lombok is Tanjung Aan Beach, which boasts practically the longest peeling wave on the island. This makes it a great spot for longboarders looking for a long and smooth ride. Another popular surf spot in Lombok is Gerupuk, which offers a smooth drop. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-time surfer, Lombok’s unique and friendly waves will make for an unforgettable surfing experience.

Here are some of the best places to surf in Lombok:

  1. Tanjung Aan: Located in South Lombok, Kuta Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots on the island. It offers consistent waves and a long stretch of beach, ideal for both beginners and experienced surfers.
  2. Gerupuk: Gerupuk is a group of four bays located in South Lombok, which offer some of the best surfing conditions on the island. The bays have different wave directions and sizes, providing a variety of options for surfers of all levels.
  3. Desert Point: Known as one of the best waves in the world, Desert Point is located in West Lombok and is considered a holy grail of surfing. The wave is fast, hollow, and requires advanced surfing skills to ride.
  4. Ekas Bay: Ekas Bay is located in East Lombok and offers some of the best left-hand waves in Lombok. The waves are fast and powerful, ideal for experienced surfers.

Surfing in Lombok is an unforgettable experience, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, warm waters, and thrilling waves. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a first-time surfer, Lombok has something to offer for everyone looking for an unforgettable surfing adventure.

Here are my recommendations for a surf school:

Gerupuk Surf School

I can’t recommend enough my teacher Dihi. He’s very professional, knows his waves but is at the same time funny, and makes you feel at ease.

Island Hopping and snorkeling

If you’re looking for an adventure beyond surfing, island hopping, and snorkeling are some of the top activities to do in Lombok. With its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life, Lombok is a paradise for those looking to explore the underwater world.

Island hopping in Lombok typically involves taking a boat to visit multiple islands in a single day. Some popular destinations include Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air, which are known for their beautiful beaches and incredible snorkeling spots. During your island hopping adventure, you can expect to encounter a diverse range of sea creatures, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and even reef sharks.

If you’re looking for a unique snorkeling experience, consider visiting Gili Nanggu or Gili Asahan,  islands located off the southwest coast of Lombok.

Waterfalls

Lombok’s stunning landscapes are dotted with breathtaking waterfalls, making it a paradise for nature lovers. From the mighty Sendang Gile Waterfall to the hidden Tiu Kelep Waterfall, there’s no shortage of cascading wonder to explore.

Located in the north of the island, Sendang Gile Waterfall is one of Lombok’s most famous waterfalls. Set within the lush greenery of the Rinjani National Park, the waterfall is an impressive sight, with water cascading down from a height of over 30 meters. Visitors can take a short hike to reach the waterfall and enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool waters at the base.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall is another must-visit destination in Lombok. Located near the village of Senaru, the waterfall is hidden deep in the jungle and requires a 45-minute trek to reach. The journey is well worth it, as visitors are rewarded with the stunning sight of water cascading over multiple tiers, creating a mesmerizing spray that fills the air.

Other waterfalls to explore in Lombok include Benang Kelambu Waterfall, known for its unique two-tiered drop and impressive natural pools, and Jeruk Manis Waterfall, which is surrounded by lush forest and offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or just a chance to reconnect with nature, Lombok’s waterfalls offer a unique and unforgettable experience. Don’t forget to pack your hiking shoes and swimsuit as you explore the island’s cascading wonders.

Hike Mount Rinjani

Hiking Mount Rinjani is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in Lombok. The mighty Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia, standing at an impressive 3,726 meters tall. The mountain is sacred to the Sasak people of Lombok, and hiking to its summit is a spiritual and cultural experience as much as it is a physical one.

The most popular trekking route to the summit starts from the village of Sembalun Lawang in the east and takes around three days to complete. The trek is challenging and requires a good level of fitness, but the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and valleys make it all worthwhile.

On the first day of the trek, hikers pass through the lush forest and camp overnight at Pelawangan Sembalun, a scenic campsite with stunning views of the valley below. On the second day, hikers make their way up to the summit, where they can witness the sunrise over the breathtaking landscape.

The descent takes hikers through the beautiful crater lake of Segara Anak, where they can take a refreshing swim in the hot springs. The trek ends at the village of Senaru, where hikers can rest and reflect on the incredible experience they’ve just had.

For those looking for a less strenuous hike, there are plenty of other trails around the mountain that offer beautiful views and a chance to explore the local flora and fauna. Whatever your level of fitness or experience, hiking Mount Rinjani is a truly unforgettable experience that should not be missed.

Visit a local village

Visiting a local village in Lombok is a unique and enriching experience that allows travelers to connect with the local culture and way of life. The Sasak people, who are the predominant ethnic group on the island, have a rich and fascinating history, and visiting their traditional villages is a wonderful way to learn about it.

One of the best villages to visit is Sade, located in central Lombok. Here, visitors can see traditional Sasak houses made of bamboo and thatched roofs, and learn about the local customs and beliefs. The villagers are friendly and welcoming and are happy to share their way of life with visitors.

Another great village to visit is Tetebatu, nestled in the foothills of Mount Rinjani. Here, visitors can witness the stunning natural beauty of the area and learn about the local agriculture. The village is known for its organic farming practices, and visitors can take a guided tour of the rice fields and vegetable gardens, as well as sample some of the delicious local produce.

In both Sade and Tetebatu, visitors can purchase handmade souvenirs and crafts, including traditional textiles and woven baskets. The money from these purchases goes directly to supporting the local community, making it a great way to contribute to sustainable tourism.

Visiting a local village in Lombok is a wonderful way to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the local culture and way of life. It’s an experience that will leave a lasting impression and create cherished memories for years to come.

Where to Eat, Drink, and Shop

The Restaurants

Here is a list of the places we visited while on the island

Rocksalt – maybe our favorite restaurant in Kuta, we ate there 3 times. The highlight is the buffalo burger I would say.

Cantina Mexicana – for French cuisine and oysters. Everything was very fresh.

Treehouse Restaurant and Bar – for some drinks and food with a view of the main street.

KRNK Bar & Restaurant – for delicious burgers

Kenza Cafe & Restaurant Kuta Lombok – amazing Mexican food. The tortillas of the tacos are different than in Mexico but homemade and super delicious. And the margarita has a sorbet in it for freshness and flavor. A unique experience.

Jiang Nan Lombok – for Chinese delicacies. Caution: everything is spicy.

Mama Pizza Kuta Lombok – if you miss pizza. Note: pizza prices are like in Europe.

Dome Lombok – if you don’t want to stay there but want to try the amazing dishes or sip a cocktail/ mocktail with some sunset views, this is the place.

Markisa  – for super fresh Mediterranean food.

Others venues

Cremoso Kuta – for delicious Italian style gelato.

BARA – for some fresh drinks and pizzas (didn’t try them tough).

Cozy house – for the best Japanese fluffy pancakes you’ll ever eat.

Siwa – for food and drinks with a gorgeous view. Worth the bike ride as it’s 15 by motorbike from Kuta.

Warungs on the island

What is a Warung?

A warung is a small, traditional Indonesian eatery or food stall that serves a variety of local dishes. It is a popular dining option throughout Indonesia, including Lombok. Warungs are often family-owned and operated, offering a casual and relaxed atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. These establishments are known for their authentic and affordable food, often featuring a range of Indonesian cuisine, such as nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce), and satay (grilled skewered meat). Warungs are typically characterized by their simple setup, with open-air seating, plastic tables and chairs, and sometimes even floor mats. They are a fantastic way to taste the local flavors and experience the vibrant culinary culture of Indonesia.

The Pink Swing – on Tanjung Aan beach. Everything was super delicious. The staff is amazing.

Turtle Resto Café – on Tanjung Aan beach. The best sunbeds on the beach come free if you order something.

Jofan Warung – on Selong Belanak beach. Delicious homemade food, fresh coconut, and comfortable beds.

Boutiques

Nalua – local Indonesian brands (mainly from Bali). They offer clothes, swimsuits, jewelry, and shoes. Everything is of great quality, not cheap but a great price for artisanal collections.

69 Slam – fun and colorful clothing, local brand as well.

The local market – you can never go wrong with the local market. They have sarongs, t-shirts, shirts, rattan bags, and souvenirs. Don’t forget to bargain. Locals love it.
