Surfing is a difficult sport – you need strong arms and core to begin and you need to love the water. Probably age matters as well. And after your first lessons, you need to move further out the ocean so you can ride unbroken waves. Then fear comes in. As I’m living in Portugal since 2013 I have always been curious to try surfing. But it looked so intimidating and hard. That’s why I decided to do SUP on flat water. But one day I saw a video on youtube that said if you can stand on a paddleboard you can surf on it. Easier said than done but it’s true. I had to hire a teacher however which I recommend. I work with Ricardo from South Adventures. He can also teach you to kitesurf, traditional surf or SUP. Adding a touch of adventure in your Portugal trip can make it really special.
In the video below you’ll see me learning how to SUP surf in sunny Costa da Caparica, 40 min by car from Lisbon where waves are almost always guaranteed. If not, wind, so you can enjoy any of the watersports that I mentioned above.
